What you might need to know about PolyBrick

FAQs

Do I need any tools for PolyBrick®?

No, but a rubber mallet to tap the blocks together more quickly can help make installation even easier.

Can I clad or render the plastic blocks?

Absolutely! One of PolyBrick's greatest advantages is its ability to accept any cladding or finishing material, letting you achieve any aesthetic whilst keeping all the structural benefits of our modular system.

Recommended Finishes:

Timber Cladding

  • Cedar, larch, or treated softwood work beautifully
  • Fix with stainless steel screws into the PolyBrick core
  • Creates natural, traditional garden aesthetics
  • Perfect for raised beds and planters

Render & Paint

  • Apply mesh-reinforced render directly to PolyBrick surfaces
  • Use exterior-grade renders suitable for plastic substrates
  • Prime with plastic-compatible primer before painting
  • Ideal for contemporary, clean-lined designs

Natural Stone & Brick

  • Thin stone veneers or brick slips can be adhesive-fixed
  • Use flexible, weather-resistant adhesives
  • Creates authentic masonry appearance without the weight
  • Perfect for retaining walls and architectural features

Metal Cladding

  • Aluminium, steel, or zinc sheets work excellently
  • Fix with appropriate fasteners into PolyBrick structure
  • Powder-coated finishes provide colour options
  • Great for modern, industrial aesthetics

Composite & Panel Systems

  • HPL panels, fibre cement, or composite boards
  • Follow manufacturer's fixing guidelines
  • Offers consistent, low-maintenance finishes
  • Excellent for commercial applications

Top Tip: PolyBrick's modular nature means you can easily change cladding materials later - simply remove and replace without affecting the structural core. Your imagination is the only limit!

How does PolyBrick compare to timber sleepers and concrete blocks?

Timber vs PolyBrick:

  • Timber rots, warps, and splits - PolyBrick doesn't
  • Timber needs annual treatment - PolyBrick needs zero maintenance
  • Timber requires cutting and drilling - PolyBrick clicks together
  • Heavy timber needs multiple people - PolyBrick is lightweight
  • Timber costs escalate with treatments - PolyBrick is one-time investment

Concrete/Masonry vs PolyBrick:

  • Concrete needs foundations and mortar - PolyBrick needs neither
  • Masonry requires skilled trades - anyone can build with PolyBrick
  • Concrete cracks in frost - PolyBrick is completely frost-proof
  • Heavy blocks need machinery - PolyBrick builds by hand
  • Concrete is permanent - PolyBrick can be moved and reconfigured

Will PolyBrick work for my specific project?

PolyBrick works for 99% of outdoor construction needs: raised beds, retaining walls up to 1m, planters, seating, steps, pond surrounds, composters, temporary structures, and architectural features. Load capacity of 150 tonnes/m² handles everything from soil to vehicles. Suitable for slopes, uneven ground, and both permanent and temporary applications.

How easy is PolyBrick to install compared to traditional materials?

Installation:

  • No tools required (vs saws, drills, mixers for traditional materials)
  • No foundations needed (vs concrete footings for masonry)
  • No skilled trades required (vs bricklayers, carpenters)
  • Build in hours, not days (vs weeks for traditional construction)
  • Lightweight blocks - no heavy lifting or machinery
  • Self-levelling system works on uneven ground

Maintenance:

  • Zero maintenance required (vs annual timber treatments, concrete repairs)
  • Pressure wash clean if needed - no special products
  • Individual blocks replaceable if damaged
  • No degradation from UV, frost, chemicals, or moisture
  • Algae/moss wipes off easily - won't penetrate the surface

How long will PolyBrick last compared to timber and masonry?

PolyBrick Lifespan: 15+ years guaranteed, engineered for 25+ years
Timber: 2-5 years before major deterioration begins
Concrete: 10-15 years before cracking and spalling issues
Masonry: 15-25 years but requires ongoing maintenance

Q: What's covered by the 10-year warranty?

Our warranty covers:

  • Structural integrity and load-bearing capacity
  • UV degradation, cracking, or brittleness
  • Manufacturing defects affecting performance
  • Frost damage or weather-related failure

What happens if something goes wrong:

  • Individual blocks easily replaceable without dismantling entire structure
  • UK-based support team provides technical guidance
  • Spare parts guaranteed for 10+ years
  • Structures can be partially dismantled for repairs
  • No specialist tools or skills needed for maintenance

Why should I trust a plastic building system?

  • 100% recycled polypropylene - same material used in car bumpers and industrial applications
  • UV-stabilised formulation prevents degradation
  • Compressive strength exceeds most building requirements
  • 10+ years manufacturing experience, 100,000+ successful projects
  • Used by professional landscapers and civil engineers
  • Rigorous testing to British and European standards
  • Made in UK to exacting quality standards

Will PolyBrick® withstand harsh weather?

PolyBrick® uses carefully selected, recycled polypropylene treated with UV stabilisers.

This means that even in bright sunshine, it will not become brittle, crack, discolour or warp. It will also handle temperature fluctuations between -50ºC and +50ºC. It is therefore freeze/thaw resistant.

As a naturally waterproof material, it is moisture resistant and will not rot or absorb water, preventing it from becoming weathered.

Can I build a retaining wall with PolyBrick®?

Absolutely! PolyBrick® is ideal for retaining walls up to 1 metre high. For taller walls, we recommend terraced designs which are both structurally superior and create attractive planting opportunities.

Foundation Requirements:

  • Ensure ground is level and free-draining
  • For walls over 600mm high, use rebar anchored into a concrete foundation strip
  • Standard walls can be built directly on compacted level ground

Key Benefits vs Traditional Materials:

  • No skilled trades needed - unlike brick or stone retaining walls
  • No mortar joints that crack and fail over time
  • Lightweight construction - no heavy lifting or machinery required
  • Excellent drainage - hollow core design prevents water build-up
  • Frost-proof - won't crack like concrete in winter
  • Modular design - easily extended or reconfigured later

Load Capacity: 150 tonnes/m² - handles significant soil loads whilst remaining lightweight to install.

For additional load bearing strength, fill the PolyBrick walls with sand, fed through the circular openings on top of the blocks.

Professional Tip: For maximum stability on problem slopes, our engineering team can provide free design guidance for your specific site conditions. Call 0333 772 3030 for technical support.

Need higher retention? Consider a terraced wall design that handle greater loads whilst creating stunning stepped garden features
